The Iconic Spanish Mustang Herd Known as the Kigers Need Your Help
In October 2024, we initiated a legal battle to protect Oregon's two most iconic wild horse herds. With the support of our community, we secured initial funding of $25,000, allowing us to file our case. We are collaborating with two other nonprofits, the Central Oregon Wild Horse Coalition and the Western Watersheds Project, and our legal representation comes from Greenfire Law.
The wild horses, known as the Kigers, reside in two separate herd management areas: Kiger and Riddle. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) plans to round up both herds in 2025 if our lawsuit to prevent this is unsuccessful. We have exhausted the initial $25,000 in funding and urgently need to raise additional funds to continue our legal fight; otherwise, we risk having to abandon the case. We and our lawyers are optimistic about the chances of success for the horses, but we need your help.
The remaining balance for our legal funds is $50,000. Currently, we have raised approximately $3,500, which includes contributions from the Western Watersheds Project for this round. This means we still need to raise $46,500. We will update this information as more donations come in.
These herds possess the oldest, most primitive bloodlines in the country, and we cannot afford to lose them. If we fail to secure the necessary funding, the case will be jeopardized, and so will the future of these horses. Please consider donating today to support the wild relatives of “Spirit,” the Kiger mustang that inspired the movie "Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron."
